Is a PDF a vector file?

Sometimes. A PDF is a container, not a kind of artwork. It can hold vector shapes, live text and pictures, in any mix. Whether your PDF counts as a vector depends entirely on what was put inside it, and that depends on which app made it.

logo.pdfGrade A

Inside: shapes, curves and text. Scales to any size.

logo.pdfGrade E

Inside: one picture made of pixels. Gets blurry or blocky when enlarged.

Same file name, same look on screen. Only what’s inside decides if it’s a vector.

PDFs that are usually vector

  • Saved or exported from Adobe Illustrator, Affinity Designer, Inkscape, CorelDRAW or Figma, when the logo was drawn in that app.
  • Exported from InDesign, when the logo placed in the layout is itself a vector file (an .ai, .eps, .svg or vector .pdf).
  • Sent by a designer as the “print-ready” version of a logo they drew.

PDFs that usually aren’t

These are pictures inside a PDF wrapper. They print exactly as sharp, or as blurry, as the original image:

  • A PNG or JPG opened in Mac Preview and exported as a PDF.
  • A logo image pasted into Word, Google Docs or PowerPoint, then saved as a PDF.
  • A Canva design where the logo was uploaded as a PNG or JPG. Canva’s own shapes and text come out as vector, but an uploaded logo stays a picture, even in a “PDF Print” download.
  • Photoshop “Save As PDF.”
  • A scan of a business card, letterhead or sketch.

Mixed PDFs are the most common

Plenty of PDFs are partly vector and partly picture: crisp vector text with the logo dropped in as a PNG, or a vector logo with a photo or texture behind it. A printer cares about the part they’re reproducing, which is usually the logo.

The checker grades a file like this C and shows you exactly where each picture sits on the page, so you can see whether the important part is vector or not.

How to check your PDF

  1. Zoom in. Open it in Acrobat or Preview and zoom to 800% or more on a curved edge of the logo. Smooth edges mean vector. Squares or blur mean pixels.
  2. Try to pick it apart. Open the PDF in Illustrator or Inkscape. Vector artwork comes in as separate shapes you can select. A picture comes in as one rectangle.
  3. Run it through the checker. Drop the PDF in and it reads the file inside your browser, without uploading it. It finds every picture on the page, measures how much of the page it covers, and checks whether any fonts are missing. If your PDF has more than one page, it grades page 1 and tells you so.

How to fix a PDF that isn’t vector

  • Go back to the source. If the logo was designed in Illustrator or another vector app, re-export the PDF from that original file, not from a screenshot or image of it.
  • Ask the designer for the original AI or EPS file with text converted to outlines. There’s a short email you can copy in how to get a vector version of your logo.
  • If the only thing anyone has is a picture, the logo has to be redrawn as shapes. Re-saving or “converting” the PDF won’t change what’s inside. See fake vector files for why.
